Specialty coffee in a hostel in Kuala Lumpur

Recently I found a new go to. Like a coffee & travel life hack: Hostels x Cafés. Yes they exists and there are so many of them. I started exploring them in Asia and first up is Back Home and LOKL Coffee Co.

You find this funky hostel and café in Chinatown of the capital of Malaysia. It’s easy to reach by local buss or by airport train and metro. The location of Back Home and LOKL is super convenient. Very central and only a couple of minutes from metro station Masjid Jamek.

Back Home Hostel

When I arrived in Back Home Hostel Kuala Lumpur I was completely exhausted and overheated from the flight from Krabi to Kuala Lumpur. The lovely girls at the reception took good care of me by providing me a glass of cold infusion, their welcome drink, before bringing me to my private room. The hostel is pretty big and has lot’s of different options for rooms; doubles, mixed 4-bed, female 4-8, mixed 6, couples deluxe 4-bed and 3-bed loft. I was staying in a double private room with shared bathroom. The room was super pretty and exactly how I like my room to look like. Minimalistic but cosy. With a fluffy big bed covered with white sheets, white walls, some wood to make it look more cosy combined with some green from plants. Big plus for a sink and kettle in my room. And the big window made me pretty happy as well. Like I said my room was pretty, but I have seen almost every room in the hostel and they are all comfortable, cosy and pretty. I was mostly amazed by the size of the rooms. You could practice dance classes here! Private rooms come with a towel, for the dorm you can rent a towel.

The bathrooms are located on both ground floor and first floor. I love the design. Typical Asian design combining wood and concrete. Showers and toilet were super clean all day, comfortable and lot’s of space. Each shower is provided with some shampoo and soap for if you didn’t bring any.

At this cosy hostel conventional breakfast is included during your stay. For me this is definitely a plus. Just to fill your belly before exploring (or sip a coffee in my case). It’s like a basic breakfast you get in most luxury but affordable hostels. Bread/toast, cereal, marmalade, butter, milk, coffee, tea and some fresh fruits. I was really happy with the peanut butter! Breakfast is served from 07:00 till 10:00 and you can enjoy it in the backyard, which is also the inside way to LOKL Coffee.

The hostel has several common areas. First one is the courtyard I just described. There are some comfortable sofas and chairs in the lounge next to the reception. There is the common kitchen where you can heat up food in the microwave and get coffee, tea and water all day. Next to the kitchen you find the door to the cinema room. Here you can watch Netflix all day. A good spot after a day of exploring. Just pop down on a comfy sofa and relax. You also find a cute swing chair in the upstairs lounge on the first floor. Enough space to chill in this hostel!

Specialty Coffee at LOKL Coffee

LOKL Coffee is just next door of the hostel. You can even reach the café through the courtyard of the hostel, where breakfast is served in the morning. It’s a small cosy looking café and pretty famous for their decoration and the café name in lightbox letters above the bar. Which looks very instagrammable. LOKL is using coffee from RVB Coffee, a specialty coffee roaster from Kuala Lumpur. The day I visit the café I skipped breakfast in the hostel and went for a full brekkie at LOKL. I ordered an espresso and they were using a washed Brazilian coffee. To be honest I didn’t got so excited at first. After sipping many Thai coffee I realized I was in Malaysia where they don’t have their own specialty coffee beans (yet). So I had to go back to sipping Brazilian coffees. I forgot that I shouldn’t judge a coffee by its origin, because I was very surprised by this espresso. It was very acidic and fruity. Not nutty, caramely or chocolatey as I expected. Well prepared although the shot was a bit long. Like I said I went for a full brekkie, so ordered waffles on the side of my coffee. If you skipped breakfast like me or you are just hungry again or you can always eat, I recommend you to try the food. It not only looks pretty, but it’s also very tasty. I had a happy belly and mind after leaving LOKL. LOKL Coffee Kuala Lumpur Specialty coffee guide Malaysia
